Ever wondered just HOW an animated episode is made?

So did we! So we decided to find out by sending our roving reporter to get the scoop.

WOOF! GRRR! BOW-WOW! WOOF! ARF! WOOF-WOOF! GRRROWL! WOOF! ARF-ARF! HOOOOWL! WOOF! RUFF-RUFF-RUFF! BOW-WOW! WOOF...

(Oops! Due to a typing error we sent a reporting Rover by mistake. Rover's not allowed on the furniture and needs to get on a chair to reach the keyboard, so we'd better send a proper Beanotown reporter to get the full facts.)

ANIMATING DENNIS AND GNASHER
A Proper Report
by a Proper Beanotown (Human) Reporter

Part 1. THE WORDS
Every episode starts with a blank piece of paper (or a blank document page on a computer screen!).
Not one of these!
This is a springboard, but it's not a springboard. AAAGH!
From there it's the springboard - no, not something from the swimming pool! It's a short bit of text that spells out the basic story in a short and simple way for the producers - the guys in charge of the series.

(NOTE FROM THE PRODUCERS: this isn't because WE are short and simple! It's because we're busy counting money - er, that is, making cartoons! It saves the writer from taking ages writing stuff that might not be good enough to use. )

If your springboard doesn't get bounced (groan), it gets a little more detail and becomes an outline!

This is NOT a picture of one of the producers doing what they like to do best... at least, that's what the producers told me to tell you.

An outline has three sections, called acts. Like in the theatre, but with less prancing about in tights and ABBA songs - what? Not all stage shows are like that? Okay, so I’ve only been to the theatre twice, and my auntie chose the shows.

Here's what an outline might look like:

ACT 1 – Setting Up The Story. Dennis and Gnasher are faced with a problem to solve or have a task they have to complete.


ACT 2 - The Complications. More drama and chaos are added to the story (D&G’s problem gets worse, or something major gets in the way of their plans).

ACT 3 - The Resolution. How can Dennis and Gnasher succeed against all odds?

This is how I think animation is made:

Games:
People use a flash creator such as Adobe Flash, and use the smooth lining tool to create frames in drawing, LOTS of frames. Games don’t really need scripts. Im not so sure how to set the keys though.
It probably also requires some VERY complicated scripting like ‘sprite2=/@101784sprite|communicate1’ <lol at the randomness.

Movie:

Again, something like adobe flash cs5 or something. You write the script (if sound) and animate things frame by frame like even moving the mouth, and things are easier with the bone tool etc. Then you record the sound by your voice actors, try to make it fit in with the animation, then add the sound effects, then test, volia its done.

Hi everyone, love the beano, there seems to be a bit of confusion about how animation is done, there are 3 types of animation, 2d (dennis & gnasher), CG (shrek) and stop motion (wallace and Gromit). Its all about pictures, to get one second of animation, 25 photographs are used!!! Its a slow process, but incredible! (I should know………im an animator.)
